One of a Kind

Two words are enough to sum up Jean Beliveau: honor and class.

Guiding Light

Jean Beliveau was an icon and an idol for an entire population. To the men he shared a dressing room with over his 20-year career, he was also the ultimate teammate

Gentleman Jean

Canadiens owner and president, Geoff Molson, shares his personal memories of his relationship with Jean Beliveau and reflects on the legacy the legendary Habs captain leaves behind.

Spanning Generations

From the Original Six era to the most recent expansion in 2000, the NHL has changed completely since Jean Beliveau first laced up the skates for the Montreal Canadiens. While it’s impossible to compare eras statistically speaking, when it comes to the impact Beliveau had on the game and the legacy he leaves behind, the results are unanimous: the legendary Canadiens captain is in a league of his own. One of the greatest players and individuals the sport has ever seen, since making his NHL debut in 1950, Beliveau has influenced multiple generations of NHLers in the six decades that followed.

Memories of an Icon

A veritable encyclopedia of all things hockey and Habs, Dick Irvin Jr. was privy to some of the greatest moments in franchise history, first thanks to his father, Dick Irvin Sr., who coached the team from 1940 to 1955, and then later, in the three decades he spent behind the microphone during Canadiens games for Hockey Night in Canada. Rubbing elbows with the biggest stars in the game on a daily basis, the Hall-of-Fame broadcaster had unfiltered access to Jean Beliveau during the iconic captain’s career in Montreal, getting to know him both as a player and as a person. To honor the memory of “Le Gros Bill”, Irvin agreed to share in these pages five moments in the life of the legendary No. 4 that he’ll never forget.

#RIPJEANBELIVEAU

When the news of Jean Beliveau’s passing broke on December 2, 2014, the world took to Twitter to mourn the loss of a legend.

Final Farewells

Former teammates and opponents, current Canadiens players and staff, politicians, dignitaries, and thousands of people whose lives had been touched and improved by having known and loved Jean Beliveau gathered in Montreal to say goodbye to the man who had given so much to the game, the city, the province and the country. In the pages that follow are final tributes from five people who knew him best, delivered during the National funeral service for Jean Beliveau at Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral, on December 10, 2014.
